Tahunanui Beach Reserve

Council has made some big changes at Tahunanui Reserve over the last few months to make it a better and safer place for visitors.  Summer is the very best time to enjoy our famous beach so make sure you take the family for a look around.  Some of the changes you’ll notice include:

The road has changed

The road is now two way around Natureland and the road between the Modeller’s Pond and Natureland has been closed to through traffic. You can still park in front of the Modeller’s Pond.

The car park is better

The main car park has been improved. Trees have been planted to give more shade (once they grow) to parked cars and people. More landscaped areas minimise the impact from the large asphalt carpark and to make the space safer by separating pedestrians from cars.

More paths for people

There is a shared path network that provides much better linkages for pedestrians and cyclists throughout the Reserve. Several speed tables have been installed to make it safer, especially for children, to cross the roads.

There are new bike racks

It’s even easier to take your bike to the beach. Designed by local architect Mathew Hay the bike racks have a playful “wave” character that reflects the beach environment.

There are more places to sit

There’s more room to share a picnic with friends and family as four large new picnic tables have been added in the shade of trees. Thanks to the Nelson North Lions Club for sponsoring two of them.

There’s more to come this year and you can help

Council has more improvements in store for Tahunanui Reserve in 2011.

Much more planting

More planting, especially of native trees and ground cover plants to offer more shade and bring more native birds to the beach.

Informative signs

New signs to help find your way around and discover all the Reserve has to offer.

New Youth Park

Tahunanui Youth Park is getting closer to completion with a draft plan recently developed after more than 100 young people submitted their ideas, through a competition held earlier this year.
