Four new aerators are being installed tomorrow at Nelson’s Wastewater Treatment Plant as a first step to reduce smells from the oxidation ponds. They are designed to reduce the risk of problems with the ponds, particularly during changes in seasons and will increase oxygen levels in the ponds which assist the algae in the ponds to break down sewerage. The next step to minimise odours will be to de-sludge the ponds and this is scheduled to be completed next financial year.…

Founders Heritage Park is gearing up for its annual book bonanza, helped by the confirmation of sponsorship for a second year. Last year, Hunter Ralfe Lawyers became the first commercial sponsors in the Book Fair’s 25-year history. This year the association is with Knapps Lawyers, which is merging with Hunter Ralfe on 1 June, which is also the opening day of the fair.…

Progress is being made on researching the options for Natureland’s future. Council Officers are working with all interested parties; some late expressions of interest have come in and these are being evaluated alongside earlier proposals and general suggestions. A report on the options is due to be discussed at the Council meeting on Tuesday 25 June.…

Consultation opens today for public feedback on an amendment to Nelson City Council’s Speed Limits Bylaw. The consultation is open until 5pm Monday 17 June 2013. The amendment is to add variable speed zones at the following Nelson schools; St Josephs School, Hampden Street School, Nelson College, Nelson College for Girls, Nelson Intermediate School, Victory School (extension of existing zone) and Tahunanui School (extension of existing zone).…

After much debate Council today decided to hold off building a pedestrian refuge on Rocks Road at the foot of Days Track until it can be integrated into the upcoming project to improve the whole of Rocks Road. It has asked Council officers to pass on residents’ safety concerns to New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA - the road controlling authority). Councillors are also keen to explore with NZTA any temporary measures that could help improve pedestrian safety in the meantime.…

The Nelson City Council will continue its support of a raft of community programmes. Changes to the Local Government Act 2002 meant Council had to assess its work programme for consistency with the new legislation. While Council projects had been considered in a workshop in February, there was still a list of those deemed as needing a second look.…

Data from the first year of improved NBus services shows a total of 360,196 trips were made across all the routes. The number of trips on the Nelson to Richmond routes has increased by 50% compared to when the service launched in April 2012. Mayor Aldo Miccio is delighted that the figures bear out the mainly positive feedback Council has had about the NBus service.…

Mediterranean fanworm has been found in Nelson harbour for the first time, but according to scientists, is unlikely to have established. The fanworm was spotted on Friday 3 May on the hull of the vessel Manini as it was being prepared to be hauled on to the Calwell slipway at Port Nelson. The find was reported to NIWA who informed the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI).…

Changes to the Local Government Act means Council will be looking at the funding of a raft of community programmes next week. Mayor Aldo Miccio says Council will carefully review any changes affecting the future of the programmes. “The legislation is clear that Council’s work programmes must meet the revised purpose and any decisions will be made after thoughtful consideration” he says.…

At next Tuesday’s meeting Nelson City Council will revisit the proposal to create a pedestrian refuge on Rocks Road at the bottom of Days Track, in the context of other requests for pedestrian refuges as well as the pending promenade development. Mayor Miccio says “We know the community is split on this issue. We’ll be considering whether we go ahead now or let the outcome of the feasibility study on the Rocks Road development determine a solution that might meet the needs of traffic, pedestrians, cyclists, swimmers and fishers.…
