Tahunanui Youth Park is getting closer to completion with a draft plan recently developed after more than 100 young people submitted their ideas, through a competition held earlier this year.

Nelson City Council would like to have still further feedback on the concept which is now available to view on Council’s website and Facebook page.

The Youth Park, located at Tahunanui Reserve, replaces the skateboard half pipe that was removed last year because of the increasing maintenance cost and limited use.

Council’s Community Co-Portfolio Holder Pete Rainey says the response to the design competition was enthusiastic and generated many of the ideas which helped the plan take shape, but still more feedback from, Nelson youth is welcomed.

“The draft plan is a true combined effort, bringing together the best ideas of our young people from across our community. I particularly encourage future users of the park to let us know what they think of the plan.”

The park has been designed as a multiuse space that caters for a variety of activities and will include a nine square, a lookout tower a basketball hoop or multi-goal and a climbing structure to add physical challenges and a sense of adventure to the park. Spaces for martial arts, projecting movies and an Urban Art Display are also planned.

A sheltered seating area in the centre of the park will be designed to chill-out and watch surrounding activities. There will also be grass areas to hang out and relax.

The park will also feature a mega swing and the addition of an in-ground trampoline or giant hammock is still being explored and will depend on budget constraints.  The aim is to link in with the theme of the art works from the BBQ area and extend this into the Youth Park.

You can provide feedback and see the draft plan and concept drawings on Council’s Facebook site or you can email.

Tahunanui Youth Park competition

In total 63 entries from Nelson youth were received for the Nelson City Council’s competition to seek design ideas for the youth focussed park at Tahunanui Reserve.

Some entries were from groups, so all up 120 young people got involved in putting forward ideas and designs. The majority came from Nayland College students. Not all of the applicants provided pictures, so there is also a plethora of written material to be considered.
