How it works … and what we do

Young people from Nelson, and reps from Nelson high schools meet throughout the year as part of the Nelson Youth Council. They suss out what other young people want for Nelson, give their opinions to the City Council when it is planning new things, and link up with other youth throughout NZ to see what they’re doing and get more ideas for Nelson.

Youth Council starts each year with a mix of new reps and some of the old crew. That way we get some continuation in our projects. All our work is supported by staff at NCC. Other community organisations who work with young people also support our projects.

We decide what things we want to focus on for the year – we might want to keep working on projects already happening or we might have completely new areas we want to focus on, like Communications or the Environment. When we’ve decided those areas, we set up Working Groups.

YES (Youth Event Support)

Youth Councillors continue to contribute the YES scheme, a programme that encourages young people to organise youth-oriented events in Nelson by helping with financial assistance and teaming them up with a community mentor. Youth run events can access up to $400 for events that are safe, alcohol and other drug free. Contact Ron at The New Hub for further information on 545 9147 or info@nelsonhub.org.
