Prior to awarding contracts or granting access approval, a written request will be initiated by Nelson City Council staff responsible for authorising and controlling work activities on any Nelson City Council managed activities.

Health and safety

Contractors will be invited to complete a Health and Safety Questionnaire designed to assist Nelson City Council staff establish the extent of their Health and Safety Management Programme

On receiving copies of the contractors and third parties Health and Safety Questionnaire, a full evaluation will he made by the Nelson City Council manager or delegate to ensure that formal systems have been established to control activities and protect personnel from harm.

Additional specific controls relevant to proposed work activity, materials handled or work location will also be considered for higher risk work or other elements that show the contractor has an effective proactive Health and Safety culture and relevant to the nature of their business activities.

All low risk activities will he controlled through:

  • Site activity inductions
  • Site access control and daily update of hazards for area
  • Control of contractors onsite by Nelson City Council appointed supervisor

Medium and high risk activities

For all medium and high risk activities contractors must show they have identified the hazards for each stage/activity and have specific written controls to prevent harm.
