Waimea Inlet management

Nelson City and Tasman District Councils have jointly initiated a project about the future management of Waimea Inlet and the surrounding land.

Three key issues

  1. The inlet and its margins have significant natural values, especially bird life, vegetation, and landscape.
  2. The inlet is bordered by land that is used for residential, lifestyle, rural production, business, and industrial purposes, as well as by major roads.
  3. The inlet and its margins have potential for a range of recreational activities.

The intention of the project is to combine people's aspirations for the future of the inlet into a management strategy that is supported by the community and the two Councils.

Your feedback is wanted!

The Councils want your feedback with planning. Have a think about these questions and talk them over with friends and family or anyone who lives near or uses the inlet and let Councils know the ideas and issues that come up.

  • What do you want the inlet and land around it to be like in the next ten years or beyond?
  • How would you like to be able to use the area?
  • Should some parts be left alone or helped to re-establish how they were?
  • What is special to you about the Waimea inlet and adjoining land?
  • What needs to be done to achieve what you want for the inlet?
  • How can the inlet be turned into the 'front yard' for the Nelson / Richmond / Waimea / Mapua part of the region?
  • Consider extending the habitat needed by the bird life for which the inlet is home, including the species that migrate to and from the northern hemisphere.
  • How can public access to and around the inlet be improved, while respecting the bird life, plants, and the rights and aspirations of adjoining landowners?
