Stoke Memorial Gates

About

The memorial plaque is set into the stone surrounds of the gates to the large local Community Hall on Main Road Stoke. The Hall itself was built using community volunteer labour as a "living memorial" to soldiers killed at war.

History

A stone plaque. Seven names are listed are those who died in World War I and only include those who were residents of Stoke prior to enlisting for services, observing the boundaries of Stoke as they were at that time.

Sadly when you visit the memorial to the Stoke dead from World War II in Marsden Valley Road, the name Ching appears once again, repeating the name found on the Marsden Memorial.

Many small New Zealand areas struggled after the wars, losing man power to work the land in two successive generations.

Location

The Stoke Memorial Gates are located at the Community Hall in Main Road Stoke.
