Spring Fling at Founders this Sunday

Posted by Nelson City Council on 13 September 2011

Nelson’s own Founders Heritage Park is celebrating spring with a public open day this Sunday 18 September from 10am – 4.30pm.

It’s a special day for the Park’s newest onsite business, Nelson’s Community Access Radio Station, Fresh FM. The station is now located permanently at Founders Heritage Park and will be broadcasting for the first time live from its new premises. The station will be open to the public and there will be an opportunity to meet staff and programme makers and have a look at their new home.

Support from the Rotary Club of Nelson as well as local businesses and individuals enabled Fresh FM to transform one of the ground floor rooms at the Park to include an on-air studio, recording rooms and a public display area that will focus on the evolution of radio in the region.

Founders Heritage Park Facility Manager Maria Anderson says, “This Nelson City Council Facility is looking great! Spring has sprung, the Church blossom is pretty in pink! There are new businesses in the Park, new displays, the Duncan Family are back in their Café which is now open for the summer season and will be firing up its pizza oven selling $10 wood fired pizzas during the Spring Fling. Over at the railway station, Bob Murray and his crew are offering $3 train rides all day.”

Other displays that have recently been developed include the Cottage Hospital, ‘Growing Italian Kiwis’, and stories around forestry, the railway and the sewage trench that ran through Trafalgar Street at one time.  The growing number of onsite businesses has added bridal wear and corsetry, portraits, and yoga to the products available at the park.

Founders Heritage Park is open 7 days from 10am-4.30pm where there is free entry for locals all year round. Founders Spring Fling will be a great day out for the family. Local Band the Immigrants will be playing at 11.30am and 1.00pm in conjunction with the Fresh FM launch and the Miyazu Blossom Festival is also happening just down the road!
