Road Closures The Maitai Valley Road is now closed from Ralphine Way, which is approximately a kilometre from the Clouston Bridge at the top of Nile Street. Maori Road off Haven Road remains closed.…

Nelson City Council has notified a change to its air quality plan to give some relief to homeowners with modern burners that had to be phased out by 1 January 2013 under the original air plan. The plan change proposes to remove the phase-out rule applying to domestic burners installed between 2000 and 2003 in Airshed A (Hospital, Victory, Washington Valley) and Airshed B1 (Tahunanui). Dr David Jackson, Principal Adviser City Development, said the change was possible because the Government had eased up on the targets for particle pollution (PM10) in the National Environmental Standards (NES) for air quality.…

Nelson City Council is asking for feedback over the next month on its draft vision for Nelson in 2060. The final vision will be used to develop Nelson City Council’s Sustainability Strategy – the blueprint for guiding our community towards a more sustainable future. The vision has been drafted based on the input of hundreds of Nelsonians through a range of community, school, business and Mayoral Taskforce workshops.…

The Nelson City Council will not appeal the recent decision of the High Court in relation to its Gambling Policy. Council met yesterday and decided not to move forward with an appeal. Council also resolved to review the Gambling Policy as soon as practicable and have asked that staff prepare a report outlining the process and timetable for the review to be considered at a future Council meeting.…

Some local businesses are getting behind the Rugby World Cup 2011 by making sure they have up to date information ready for visitors. Sands Fish and Chips co-owner Sandy Garnham says when she found out there was a new map and brochure of Nelson, especially launched for RWC 2011, she picked some up from Nelson City Council Customer Services, at Civic House, for her customers. The free new brochure called Explore Nelson is similar in presentation to the Wayfinding series of signs recently installed around town.…

Nelson City Council has allocated its Contract Funding and One-off Grants from the Community Assistance Fund following a day of hearings and deliberations last week. A tied vote around the Council table yesterday meant that the proposal to reopen consultation on the Montgomery Square upgrade project will not proceed. Council would have needed a majority to vote in favour of the proposal to progress it, a tied vote was not sufficient. After considerable discussion Council has resolved to leave the option open for The Tasman Bays Heritage Trust to extend the current museum storage facility building at Isel Park. However, progressing the proposal and securing funding for any extension will still be subject to approval via the Long Term Plan process next year. Thousands of people gathered at Tahunanui Beach today to attempt the world’s largest haka to celebrate One Year to Go until Rugby World Cup 2011. While the record was not quite achieved, it was a major community success to everyone involved. Haka organiser Mike Elkington says, although rain was the likely reason for fewer participants, today’s attempt was a win for members of the community who came together today and over the past couple of months in an unprecedented way.…
