Safe journeys to school

Remember the old days when kids all biked or walked to school? Now the bike sheds are empty and the traffic jams up around schools as parents drop children off and pick them up.

Council initiated a survey in late 2004 to get some facts on just how children are travelling to school, to look into some of the reasons why so few use the journey for exercise, and, at the same time, to look at other safety factors in local parks and streets.

A similar survey was done in 2002 at Auckland Point, initiated by the Nelson Safer Community Council: That study was a walking audit, done by the school children. This time, Safe Journeys staff went further with the questionnaires, and focused on Nelson Intermediate and Victory Schools, as the stats showed they had higher accident rates for pedestrians and cyclists.
