RWC 2011 Nelson Steering Group

The RWC 2011 Nelson Steering Group has a mission to involve as many residents, businesses and visitors as possible in the celebration of Rugby World Cup 2011 in Nelson.

Where the Council staff are dedicated to delivering the fundamentals of two matches, Fan Zones and the festival of Rugby, the Steering Group's role is to lead and coordinate business and community involvement that will help make RWC 2011 in Nelson the premier event of the decade.

Goals

The Steering Group's goals include

  • maximising Nelson's economic benefits
  • positioning Nelson as a 'must-visit' destination for long-term tourism legacy
  • ensuring Nelson Tasman residents have a positive experience as hosts and celebrate this 'once in a lifetime' event in true regional style
  • leaving a positive, lasting legacy for the region including enduring economic, cultural and social benefits for the region's residents, businesses, and other stakeholders.

Sara Chapman

Ms Chapman's professional career was as a strategic planner.  She worked on brand marketing at Saatchi & Saatchi and other international advertising agencies in New York, London and Asia.  Now, Ms Chapman is Chairman of Tasman Bays Heritage Trust - The Nelson Provincial Museum and on the board of the Bishop Suter Trust.  At home, she is an operational firefighter and Station Officer with Collingwood Volunteer Fire Brigade and a victim support worker with New Zealand police.  Her team is Collingwood Rugby Football Club which has a proud history in Golden Bay.  She received a Masters in Business Administration from Hofstra University, New York, 1982.

Bronwyn Monopoli

Bronwyn Monopoli is a chartered accountant in public practice who specialises in providing accounting services and taxation and financial advice to rural businesses.   She operates as a sole practitioner, employing six staff and working with 150 small to medium business clients - principally livestock farmers and horticultural businesses but also including some farm stays, vineyards, potters and other rural tourism enterprises.

She has a Bachelor of Agricultural Science degree and a Bachelor of Business Studies degree, both from Massey University.  She is a fellow of the New Zealand Institute of Chartered Accountants (NZICA).

She also operates as a professional director, and currently serves on the boards of Port Nelson Limited, VIN Incorporated, the New Zealand Forest Research Institute Limited, the Animal Health Board (Incorporated), the WearableArt Development Charitable Trust, the Nelson Millennium Centre Trust and the New Zealand International Arts Festival Trust.

She has a strong interest in women in business, the arts and is a keen exponent of Masters ski racing.

Barney Thomas

Barney Thomas represents Iwi on the RWC 2011 Nelson Steering Group. His mother is Ngāti Rārua, Ngāti Toa Rangatira, Ngāti Tama, and Te Ātiawa and his father is Ngai Tahu.

Barney works at the Department of Conservation as Puo Kura Taiao (Iwi Manager). He serves on the Board of Governance at Wakatu Incorporation, is the Chairman of Tiakina Te Taiao (Iwi Environmental Committee) and the Vice Chairman of Ngāti Rārua Ātiawa Iwi Trust (NRAIT).

Barney has a Diploma in Philosophy and Law from Te Wananga o Raukawa and a Diploma in Matauranga Maori from Te Wanaga o Raukawa.

Born in Picton, Barney was educated at Queen Charlotte College and played Rugby and cricket. He is married to Shona and has three children - Renee, Fraser and Jackson - and one granddaughter, Sophia.
