Residential intensification survey

Future growth through residential intensification

Nelson City Council is exploring options for increased levels of residential intensification as one method of providing for future growth. The Nelson Urban Growth Strategy has identified support for this approach. Council is looking at options that will enable more people to live in existing areas so that residential land and services are used more efficiently.

To help us do this Council is undertaking a survey of residents who currently live in higher density housing (defined here as properties with a land area less than 350m²). This will help determine how best to match policy with the needs of occupants.

What Council is interested in is:

  • who currently lives in higher density housing in Nelson
  • why people live in this type of housing
  • what people think of living in higher density housing
  • what people think of the future of residential intensification
  • the good and bad things about residential intensification
  • what services people require in close proximity
  • where this type of higher density housing should be located

Definition of higher density housing

Higher density housing refers to medium to high density housing with 15 or more dwellings per hectare.
