Reducing alcohol supply to minors

A project to reduce the supply of alcohol to teenagers who ‘pre-load’ before going into town

Local research has shown that parents are the primary suppliers of alcohol to their underage teenagers. Safe City Nelson aims to slow down and reverse the trend of parental supply of alcohol.

The project has three key components:

Awareness raising

Raising parent awareness so that they are less likely to supply

  • Provision of resource for parents - “Do you give booze to your baby?”
  • Media outreach
  • Workplace promotion

Talking with parents

A meeting held with the parents of Nelson College for Girls

  • Presentation of ‘Choices’ a theatre piece that was developed by young people for young people but which will impact greatly on parents wanting to steer their own teenagers to make good choices
  • Discussion round tables where we ask parents to reconsider the practice of supplying alcohol to their minors and to agree, and that if they do, to provide supervision
