Proposing an event for Nelson’s Rugby festival is one of several ways the community can get involved in RWC 2011, according to a new guide released today by the RWC 2011 Nelson Central Media Office. Nelson’s Rugby festival manager Sophie Kelly says that she’s been approached by many groups wanting to put on an event during RWC 2011, and the Nelson Guide for Community Involvement in Rugby World Cup 2011 now gives them guidance on how to be part of the action. “Although Council is coordinating the festival’s flagship events, we want to fill two months full of fantastic events that show off Nelson to both visitors and residents.…

Nelson City Council’s RWC 2011 leadership structure is undergoing a change with the departure in late August of RWC 2011 Nelson Project Manager Simon Bruce-Miller. In addition, although Susan Coleman retains her role as RWC 2011 Nelson Regional Director, she will focus more on relationship management with Tournament Organiser Rugby New Zealand 2011 Ltd and being an official spokesperson and less on managing the contract deliverables. Thousands of kiwis in the top of the South plan to shatter the Guinness World Record for the largest haka on Saturday, 11 September 2010, at Tahunanui Beach to celebrate the world coming to Nelson and New Zealand for next year’s Rugby World Cup 2011. The invitation (tono) will go to all the communities of Te Tau Ihu (Top of the South) to gather for the record attempt at 3pm on the beach at low tide to perform Ka mate, ka mate, ka ora, ka ora, the haka performed by the All Blacks. Marking the One Year to Go date until RWC 2011 kicks off, Nelson City Council, the RWC 2011 Nelson Steering Group, and iwi across the top of the South are coordinating the record-breaking attempt as a way to ready the region and the country for this once in a lifetime event.…

Nelson City Council will invest $655,000 in the form of reallocated staff resources to deliver a quality RWC 2011 experience to Nelson. Council’s RWC 2011 commitment will be strengthened by the assignment of existing staff with expertise in areas that will help deliver the once in a lifetime event. On Friday 16 April, members of the media are invited to join Rugby New Zealand 2011 Ltd Chief Executive Martin Snedden for an up-close tour of the Trafalgar Park upgrade. Mr Snedden visits Nelson this week to support the city’s progress to date as host region for Rugby World Cup 2011 (RWC 2011). Trafalgar Park is being upgraded into a regional multi-event venue capable of hosting major events such as RWC 2011 matches next year.…
