You wanted it – you’ve got it! That’s the message for Nelsonians as the first stage of Nelson City Council’s new improved bus service, called NBus, launches on Monday. The first stage of the improvements service is the increased frequency of the service between Nelson and Richmond. Buses will run every 15 minutes in the peak times and every 30 minutes off peak.…

Nelson City Council wants to remind people they have got just a few days to have their say on proposed changes to the Dog Control Policy and Bylaw before consultation closes at 5pm, Monday 5 March. Council is currently reviewing the policy that decides such things as which public places dogs should be allowed to run free or be on a leash, and areas where dogs are not allowed. Deputy Mayor Ali Boswijk, who is a member of Council’s dog control working party, says she is pleased with the number of submissions to date.…

A petition calling for a poll on the creation of a Maori ward for Nelson City has reached the threshold requiring a poll of electors. The petition required 5% of Nelson electors (1,690). A total of 2,176 signatures were collected and 1,725 were validated.…

Priorities have been set to repair the damage caused by last December’s flooding, with some urgent work already underway while larger jobs will need to be considered as part of the Long Term Plan which opens in April. Following completion by the Recovery Manager and sign-off of the Recovery Action Plan by Nelson’s Chief Executive Officer, Nelson City Council has started approximately $3m worth of priority works needed as part of the region’s Recovery Plan this financial year. Nelson City Council has appointed Peter Olorenshaw as the representative for Environmental Sustainability Issues to the Nelson Regional Transport Committee. Three people were nominated for the role, and the Council noted the high quality of the nominations during the discussion at yesterday’s meeting. Mr Olorenshaw was chosen as the most suitable person for the job, based on his knowledge of sustainability issues and his demonstrated understanding of strategic transport issues in Nelson.…

The Nelson City Council will not spend any money in advertising the amalgamation of Nelson City and Tasman District as recommended by the Local Government Commission. Council resolved at its meeting today not to commit funds or resources to advertising in support or opposition of the reorganisation scheme for the Union of Nelson City and Tasman District in accordance with Clause 55(2), Schedule 3 of the Local Government Act 2002. The reorganisation scheme is subject to electoral polls in both Council areas with more than 50% required in each area to for the union to proceed.…

Nelson City Council has taken the first step in creating a rates remission scheme for ratepayers affected by natural calamity. The move comes after the December flood and slip event which saw dozens of residents have to leave their homes due to safety concerns and some have still not been able to return. Following legal advice Council has today put the scheme to give rates relief out for public consultation.…

Feedback is now invited on the Queen’s Gardens Landscape Conservation Plan. The Plan has been drafted to ensure the heritage values of Queen’s Gardens are recognised and preserved. This is a particularly important piece of work at this time as plans are being drawn up for the redevelopment of the Suter Art Gallery on the edge of the Gardens.…

Nelson’s Go By Bike Day is back on Wednesday 15 February with free breakfasts for riders all over town between 7 and 9am. Free, healthy food will be provided by Nelson City Council and attendees may be lucky enough to pick up one of many cycle friendly spot prizes.
