Nelson City Council

In 1986 the Nelson City Flag was approved by the New Zealand Herald of Arms. The design is based on the City’s Coat of Arms, which was granted to Nelson 50 years ago to mark the centenary of the signing of the Letters Patent by Queen Victoria creating Nelson as a Bishop’s See and City.

The City of Nelson Civic Trust is authorised to market it - this gives the Trust the opportunity to promote the concept of pride in our Civic symbol and also to generate revenue for the Trust.

The flag incorporates in its design a number of references to the history and heraldry of the City. The mitre indicates that Nelson is a Cathedral City and the wavy blue and white bands show that Nelson is beside the sea and the black cross is taken from the Arms of Admiral Lord Nelson.

The flags come in two sizes: Flagpole and Desktop. Both flags can be purchased from Nelson City Council, Civic House, 110 Trafalgar Street or you may order by email.
