Posted by Nelson City Council on 27 June 2011
Six months has gone quickly since our last newsletter and there have been a lot of changes and no doubt there will be plenty more to come as we explore further the possible amalgamation of Nelson City Council and Tasman District Council.
I have recently joined NCC as Team Leader in the Resource Consent team.
My family and I moved to New Zealand – north of Auckland just over 5 years ago but have always wanted to experience the South Island and Nelson in particular having visited on holiday a couple of years ago so we are really happy to be here at last.
We are looking forward to exploring and enjoying the great outdoors in this lovely region.
Hi everybody, I have just started as the graduate planner with a fixed term role for 2011 and am looking forward to the year ahead and getting to meet you all.
I completed my Masters degree in Resource and Environmental Planning in October of last year and for 18 months worked part time work at ViaStrada.
When not studying or working I enjoy doing things in the outdoors, cooking and going to the gym.
I am the new Principal Adviser Resource Management Planning in the Policy and Planning team (fourth floor).
I have 16 years Local government planning experience at Waitakere City Council and Auckland Regional Council as both a consent planner and planning policy manager.
Most recently my work focussed on leading spatial planning, the development and implementation of community plans in the Waitakere Ranges, strategic District Plan changes, and environment court mediation.
A key part of my new role is to oversee the development of the Resource Management Plan for Nelson.
I have just started as Principal Adviser-Community in the Policy and Planning team.
I have also moved cities having just arrived in Nelson from Wellington, where I was working as a principal policy analyst for the Ministry of Health, most recently on child and youth health issues.
I have been given a great welcome by new colleagues and am really looking forward to working with you all.
I have a 14 year old daughter and we are both looking forward to making the most of the fantastic physical environment that the Nelson region provides and enjoying time with extended family members who live here.
I came to New Zealand 7 years ago from British Columbia, Canada (Victoria on Vancouver Island), which I reckon is the kiwi part of Canada.
I had spent 5 years working in the Treasury of BC (mostly on our 2010 Winter Olympic Bid and other economic development portfolios) but was itching for a new challenge when the Department of Labour in NZ offered me a role in the capital.
After spending a few years working for the Department of Labour in Wellington, I moved to Nelson to work from the local office here and fell head over heels in love with this gorgeous wee city!
I spent the past year and a half in Wellington working for the Office of the Auditor-General leading a performance audit on how Regional Councils’ are managing freshwater quality, which was an tremendously rewarding and fascinating project – dear to my heart I must admit. As the freshwater audit work was finishing up I was thrilled to be offered a role here at NCC heading up the LTP process – returning to my home in NZ!

As mentioned in the previous Planning Nelson Newsletter, the Nelson City Council reorganisation took effect on 1 November to regroup staff to best meet customer needs and be smarter in our delivery of services to our community. The physical shifting of everyone is now in place and if you need to contact anyone please use the organisation chart below.

For the last 8 months 98% of non-notified consents were on time and 100% of notified consents were on time.
For the last 8 months the average processing days are 16 for non-notified consents and 55 days for notified consents.
We have processed a total of 412 consents for the 11 months to end of May, last year we processed 412 consents for the 12 months to end of June.
Since the RMA Amendments 2009 came into effect we have conducted training sessions with Tasman and Marlborough District Councils to provide real examples of how assessments need to be different by comparing the process for a variety of types of applications pre changes and post changes. We also used joint training sessions to establish a more consistent approach in the assessment of applications up to the s95 decisions.
With less than 100 days to go Council staff are involved in preparing an enforcement plan for a “clean precinct” surrounding Trafalgar Park, receiving any applications lodged under the RWC (Enabling) Act and dissemination Major Events Management Act information to residents and businesses.
If you have any questions email Mandy Bishop, Manager Resource Consents.
The Major Projects Team is still available for free pre-application advice on larger subdivisions or developments.
Potential applicants should check out the Major Projects Team brochure on Council's website.

The Nelson Tasman Urban design Panel (UDP) is still available for pre application consultation for projects with significant urban design implications.
