December 2010
The staff at Nelson City Council wish you happy and safe holidays and we look forward to working with you in the New Year.
The Council offices are closed from 3pm 24th Dec and re-open 8.30am 5th January.
Welcome to Kim Grindley our new Property Information Officer who is undertaking the planning checks on all building consents.
Farewell, temporarily, to Susi B.Solly who will leave the consents team on 17th December to enjoy her new parenthood role with Lance – we wish them all the best! We will soon interview for a one year fixed term contract to try and cover all that Susi does for us.
Recruitment is nearly complete for a Team Leader to commence in the consents team near the end of January when we will have a full team once more.
The Nelson City Council reorganisation took effect on 1 November to regroup staff to best meet customer needs and be smarter in our delivery of services to our community. The regrouping was based on:
Consequently the old Planning and Consents division headed by Richard Johnson with Environmental Policy, Resource Consents and Building Consents has become the Regulatory Division. Richard Johnson is the Executive Manager and he looks after the Resource Consents, Building Consents and Parking business units.
Staff in the old Environmental Policy business unit have joined other staff in the following areas:
Strategy and Planning Division, Michael Schruer Executive Manager
Community Services Division, Susan Coleman Executive Manager
We are in the process of moving within the Council buildings to form these new teams and adjusting to the new roles.

A new, regional GIS (geographic information system) website made its debut in early December at www.TopoftheSouthMaps.co.nz.
Nelson City and Tasman District Councils are very proud of this collaborative new regional service that will enable users to find data from both Councils in one place with a seamless presentation that has been designed to be so user friendly, it won’t require training.
We want to alert you to a few differences you may notice between the new site and the old one. First, the new site is super fast. You’re going to be pleasantly surprised.
Second, you’ll find the same Nelson information on property, recreation and services such as property reports, reserves, water, wastewater and stormwater pipes, all of which is now available for Tasman District. We’ve also added new information, such as walking and cycling tracks, dog exercise areas, bus routes, and even rubbish and recycling collection days.
Data that is available for download includes
You can download it as
Because the two Councils are combining data, some of it is not yet ready to publish and therefore cannot be viewed on the map or be downloaded. We will work toward making it available in the next phase of the project. Until then, the data is available from each Council’s GIS team.
If you have AutoCAD Map or 3D Civil, you can view the map services. If you have Google Earth you can use the KML link to open it and display the relevant data. If not, you can download a free copy of ArcGISExplorer () to view the formats listed above, or email gis@topofthesouthmaps.co.nz to request the data in other formats.
The Major Projects Team is still available for free pre-application advice on larger subdivisions or developments. Potential applicants should check out the Major Projects Team brochure on Council's website. Click here to visit the Council website for more information.
The Nelson Tasman Urban design Panel (UDP) is still available for pre application consultation for projects with significant urban design implications. Click here to visit the Council website for more information.
