Building and Planning » Property and land use » Property ownership » Overhanging vegetation
Nelson city is regularly faced with the problem of overhanging vegetation obstructing footpaths and roads.
The diagram (bottom) illustrate how far back from the edge of the road or footpath trees and shrubs should be. Those clearances are necessary to ensure road safety is not compromised and pedestrians are not inconvenienced.
The Local Government Act 1974 places the responsibility of clearing offending vegetation on the owner of the property fronting the road.
All residents are urged to check their frontages to ensure the below clearances are maintained at all times.
Council contractors will carry out machine cutting where residents do not keep vegetation cut back. The quality of this cutting will not be high.
