Nurturing resilient youth

People and organisations in our community are getting together to help the young people of Nelson. The newly-formed ‘Nurturing Resilient Youth Group’ aims to support our region’s parents, teachers and other community leaders who help youth learn to take life in stride, feel confident and bounce back from the day-to-day troubles they often face.

How we can encourage resiliency in youth

Being ‘resilient’ basically means being flexible, having a positive attitude about your life and your self, and having good ways to deal with difficulties and setbacks. We’ve identified six things that we can do to help youth learn to be more resilient:

  • Positive connections with other people
  • Clear, consistent, and appropriate boundaries
  • Life-guiding skills like clear communications, conflict management and goal setting
  • Nurture and support of family, friends and community
  • Purposes and expectations
  • Meaningful participation
