New Service Hub at Elma Turner Library

Elma Turner Library customers will have noticed a big change in the main service desk area in the past month. The central city library has installed three self-service machines and moved the Information Services desk next to the main desk area to create a ‘Service Hub’. The idea is that customers can come to one central area in the library to have all of their information, reference, computer booking, library account and membership enquiries answered. And the move has created more space.

The self-service machines provide an option for customers who prefer not to wait in a queue for staff to check out their items. They’re also helping staff cope with increased numbers of customers. For the year to 30 June 2011, 413,490 people came through Elma Turner Library’s doors as opposed to 346,840 for the year to 30 June 2008. That’s an increase of 66,650 customer visits, or more than a 16% rise in three years. With that many customers, the machines are also helping cut down on staff book-handling injuries.

The Service Hub is the first phase of a rearrangement of the library that it is hoped will accommodate more people and provide for quiet reading spaces as well as technology zones and public meeting spaces.

Truly, the library is the community’s living room.
