Introduction

Nelson City Council has prepared a Regional Public Transport Plan (the Plan) as required by the Public Transport Management Act 2008 (PTMA).  All councils are required to adopt a Plan by the end of 2011 to be eligible for funding from the NZ Transport Agency for public transport.  The Plan describes the public transport service the Council plans for Nelson.

History of this Document

A discussion document was circulated to key stakeholders as required by the PTMA as well as a number of other interested parties in early May 2011.  Nelson City Council staff considered the feedback from this first round of consultation and made changes to the draft Plan.

The second draft was released for public comment in July 2011.  Hearings were conducted at the end of August and Council adopted the Plan on 3 November 2011.

Purpose of a Regional Public Transport Plan

The PTMA states the purpose of a Regional Public Transport Plan is to:

  • Specify how the Council intends to give effect to the public transport service components of the regional land transport strategy.
  • Contribute to the aim of achieving an affordable, integrated, safe, responsive, and sustainable land transport system in an efficient and effective manner.

The document sets out the current services, the proposed services, and policies applying to public transport.
