The Nelson City Physical Activity Fund (NCPAF) has allocated $31,123 to local community sport and recreation groups in the 2009 funding round.

The fund received 27 applications and was able to offer funding to 17 organisations.

The fund, formerly the Hillary Commission Community Sports Fund, is administered by Nelson City Council and provides small grants to groups that offer opportunities and encourage more young people into physical activity.

Funding is being used for coaching, equipment and community events that reach out to young people who would not otherwise be taking part in the activities.

This year saw the launch of a new fund called the Big Idea Fund, and 15 applicants put forward diverse expressions of interest. The NCPAF committee has decided to award $7,726 to The New Hub to develop a Nelson CACTUS programme, based on successful programmes in other New Zealand locations, including Picton and the West Coast, where at risk youth participate in a challenging physical programme as a way to improve fitness, self-esteem and confidence.
