Membership information

Adults

To qualify for free membership you will need:

Personal identification with name and photo e.g.

  • Driver's licence or passport

    • together with a formal or official document with your name on it, showing your current residential or rate-paying address in the Nelson, Tasman or Marlborough regions, e.g

    • A recent utility account
    • Bank statement
    • Tenancy agreement\
    • Rates statement

    Children under 18 years:

    For children to borrow from the children's library only

    Parent or guardian must show photo ID e.g. Driver's licence or passport

    For children to borrow from all sections (including the adult section)

    Student membership

    If you attend a Nelson, Tasman or Marlborough school full-time, a student ID card is acceptable personal identification.

    If you are under 18 years old, you will need to have your parent or guarantor (aged over 18) come with you to the library with their personal ID and proof of address and sign the authority section of your membership form.

    If you are a student boarding at a Nelson school, you will need to have the Housemaster or Hostel Manager sign the authority section of your membership form if your parent or guarantor is unable to do so.

    Subscription members

    If you do not qualify for free membership to the Nelson Public Libraries, you may pay an annual subscription to join.

    Subscription charges

    • 12 months - $100
    • 6 months - $50
    • 3 months - $25

    Visitor membership

    If you're temporarily living in one of the following types of accommodation:

    • Backpackers
    • Motel
    • Hotel
    • Holiday park
    • Motor camp
    • Marina

    It is possible to join the library as a visitor. You must produce personal photo ID. The cost of this service is $20.00 per card for four weeks' membership, with restricted borrowing rights. Once you have proof you have been living at the same Nelson, Tasman or Marlborough address for 30 consecutive days, you will be eligible for free membership.
