Crusaders welcomed back

Nelson City Council is delighted with the news that the Crusaders have chosen Nelson as the venue for either a home Qualifier match or Semi-Final as the Super Rugby competition enters its final stages. The date and nature of the match depends on the outcome of this weekend’s final round of matches. It could either be a Semi-Final on Friday 1 July or Saturday 2 July or a qualifying match a week earlier on Friday 24 June or Saturday 25 June.…

Future of Montgomery Square upgrade still to be decided

Councillors were briefed on the High Court decision on the planned Montgomery Square upgrade at yesterday’s meeting. While no decisions were made during that briefing, Council is unlikely to appeal the decision to grant an injunction that prevents Council from letting the tender to carry out the upgrade work in time for the Rugby World Cup 2011. Chief Executive Keith Marshall says “The Court decision hinged on the special circumstances around the change of use for this specific project and hence generating a need for additional consultation.…

Council to be briefed on High Court Decision

Councillors will receive legal advice at their meeting tomorrow about the High Court decision that means the work on the planned upgrade for Montgomery Square will not be completed in time for Rugby World Cup 2011. The High Court issued an order last Thursday evening preventing Council from letting the tender to carry out the work. Council’s legal advisers state that the High Court recognised Council carried out consultation on the project with the public and the affected parties, but the extent of the change of use of the car park was significant enough that Council should have undertaken further consultation with directly affected parties.…

Know a young person making a difference in our community? Nominations are now open for the Nelson Tasman Youth Volunteer Awards. Jointly run by Volunteer Nelson, The New Hub, and the Nelson City and Tasman District Youth Councils, the annual awards celebrate the voluntary efforts of young people aged 12 to 25.   Any young person working in a voluntary capacity can be nominated.…

Time running out to have your say

The clock’s ticking for Nelson residents to have their say on the draft Annual Plan, which sets the city’s direction for the next 12 months.   The draft Plan closes this Friday and outlines any changes made to the Nelson Community Plan (ten year plan) adopted in 2009. Well over 600 submissions had been received by Tuesday 26 April, with the majority containing views on the proposed development at Rutherford Park.…

New tools to improve safety for senior road users available in Nelson

A new set of tools aimed at keeping older road users safe on New Zealand roads is available free online and being boosted by local classroom based courses. The NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) has launched the Staying Safe online toolkit - a suite of new older driver education resources to help improve road safety for people over 70 years of age. Road closures and traffic restrictions for Super Rugby game

Nelson City Council and Tasman Rugby Union will be running a larger Traffic Management Plan at the Super Rugby match on Saturday 23 April to improve safety for pedestrians and spectators. The proposed road closures are also similar to the RWC 2011 Traffic Management Plan so it will be a chance to test part of that plan as well. The following closures and restrictions will be in place: Trafalgar Street will be closed to traffic from 5pm to 10pm on Saturday 23 April between Grove Street and Wainui Street.…

Competition for youth to design new park at Tahunanui

A competition seeking fresh ideas from the city’s young people for the design of a youth focussed park at Tahunanui Reserve kicked off yesterday. The Nelson City Council and the Nelson Youth Council are launching the competition in a bid to ensure as many young people as possible get the opportunity to see their ideas transformed into reality. The Tahunanui Youth Park replaces the skateboard half pipe, removed last year because of the increasing maintenance cost and limited use.…

Wakefield Quay a sight to behold

The Wakefield Quay Development project is almost finished after more than a decade transforming what was once considered an eyesore. Work is now under way on a timber decking promenade to give public access along the shoreline from the Sunderland Pier (the Seafarers Memorial Jetty) to the Nelson Yacht Club ramp. Nelson City Council Principal Adviser Reserves and Community Facilities, Andrew Petheram says the project has made a huge difference to the precinct.…
