Lower Trafalgar Street pedestrian improvements

Work has now started on improvements to pedestrian safety around the Grove and Trafalgar Street intersection as part of the planned maintenance for kerb renewal

This is in keeping with the following goal from the Heart of Nelson Strategy:

  • Improving the functionality of existing intersections, creating safer environments for drivers, pedestrians and cyclists.

Why does it need changing?

This is a tricky intersection because the roads aren't aligned dead straight and are very wide. Traffic turning left out of Grove Street has a tendency to under-cut the corner and merge - rather than wait for the road to be clear. This creates a hazard for pedestrians (as the exiting traffic is normally looking for oncoming traffic).  The width for the road also makes crossing difficult for the less mobile. Events held in Rutherford Park and Trafalgar Park are likely to generate significant pedestrian volumes from time to time, so it is important to make this intersection safer and more accessible.
