Search and Discover

Nelson Public Libraries’ new online catalogue, Discovery Search, is one of the most exciting innovations the libraries have embraced in recent years and gives the public the ability to “Discover” a huge range of resources from right across library collections.

Searching the catalogue and Libraries' online resources

In fact, it can seem a little overwhelming at first. A simple search for a book title might bring up hundreds of results because the Discovery Search will search across physical resources as well as databases, and through journal articles, book reviews and so on.

Searching Libraries' shelves only?

If you’re wanting to search for items just from the library shelves, there are options that can limit your search:

- simply tick “catalogue only” under the Search options on the Discovery Search home page.

Alternatively, once you get to the results page you can limit the search at this stage through the search panel on the left-hand side, for example, by publication date, library branch or “catalogue only”.

Personalised accounts

Creating a personalised account is a great option if you want to:

Save preferences

Organize your research with folders

Share your folders with others

View others' folders

Save and retrieve your search history

Create email alerts and/or RSS feeds

Gain access to your saved research remotely

- simply click on Login for full access and then 'Login to EBSCO' tab at the top right corner.

Requesting an item?

Want to request an item to be put aside for you? It’s easy to do by clicking “Request this item”.

You’ll need to enter your full library card barcode number and PIN to continue if you haven't logged in initially.

Need help with searching?

We hope you’ll enjoy exploring and making Discoveries of your own.

Talk to library staff if you’d like further help, email library.ref@ncc.govt.nz or telephone 546-8100 and ask for extension 8414.

Library searches faster, easier from anywhere at anytime

Finding books, magazines, DVDs, CDs, online articles, e-books and everything else held in Nelson Public Libraries has just got easier with the installation of a new library management system that includes leading edge search technology.

“Our customers will now have more information at their finger tips,” says acting Library Manager Nicola Harwood. “Rather than accessing our catalogue and electronic content separately, at the push of a button, they can now search across most of what we purchase and license. This improved searchability will be particularly beneficial to people who need the most up to-date research or findings on a topic or issue. A single search will identify not only the books on our shelves but also the latest information contained in the online journals we subscribe to.”

Our library members can also access this information at anytime by remotely accessing our website using their PC, laptop or cellphone. The new service, Kôtui, went live on Friday 4 November following months of preparation, including the migration of just under 200,000 item and borrower records into the new system.

Kôtui is the result of collaboration between a group of public libraries, the Association of Public Library Managers (APLM), Local Government New Zealand (LGNZ) and the National Library that identified the need for an affordable, efficient collection management and access service with excellent functionality.

For more information visit the Kôtui website.

Local poets brought their own poems to this event. Some of these poems follow:

HAIKU

Locked beneath the ice

Ghostly orange rippling

Carp dreaming of spring

MACLEAN

NOT JUST BEADS

It knows how to rain in Golden Bay

not poncy beads that lie on glass

to glisten in the morning

but with a hundred hooves

that pound above my head

filling the night with wild drumming

I smile into the dark

wrapped in a quilt

New Service Hub at Elma Turner Library

Elma Turner Library customers will have noticed a big change in the main service desk area in the past month. The central city library has installed three self-service machines and moved the Information Services desk next to the main desk area to create a ‘Service Hub’. The idea is that customers can come to one central area in the library to have all of their information, reference, computer booking, library account and membership enquiries answered. And the move has created more space.

The self-service machines provide an option for customers who prefer not to wait in a queue for staff to check out their items. They’re also helping staff cope with increased numbers of customers. For the year to 30 June 2011, 413,490 people came through Elma Turner Library’s doors as opposed to 346,840 for the year to 30 June 2008. That’s an increase of 66,650 customer visits, or more than a 16% rise in three years. With that many customers, the machines are also helping cut down on staff book-handling injuries.

The Service Hub is the first phase of a rearrangement of the library that it is hoped will accommodate more people and provide for quiet reading spaces as well as technology zones and public meeting spaces.

Truly, the library is the community’s living room.

Nelson Photo News launched online

The Nelson Photo News (1960-1972) is now available online at www.photonews.org.nz/nelson.

The first run of the Nelson Photo News is a rare and unique photographic record of life in Nelson in the early 1960’s and 1970’s – a time of rapid social and cultural change. The serial captures personal and community events through photographs and lively commentary. Featuring photos by well known Nelson photographers, including Barry Simpson, Geoffrey C. Wood, Peter Cooper and Kingsford Studios, the Nelson Photo News is a comprehensive snapshot of Nelson life from the 1960s and 70s.

As the editor Barry Simpson stated in the first issue: “Our experience …. indicates that many people allow the first issue or two to be destroyed, which is regretted later…subscribers grow to value the pictorial record of community life.”

Unfortunately most early issues have been discarded, and over the run only a handful of complete sets are believed to exist in private collections. Currently there are no full sets held in the public domain.

The Friends of the Nelson Library Microfilm Committee responded to community pressure to do something about preserving and making accessible this valuable resource. With funds left over from other microfilming and digitisation projects a decision was made to digitise the first 12 years of the Nelson Photo News from 1960 to 1972, which covered the period of editorship under Barry Simpson and later, Peter Skinner.

To complete a shortfall in funding for the project the committee applied to be part of a Digital NZ poll, where projects throughout New Zealand competed for votes. The two highest polling projects were each awarded a $10,000 grant.

The Nelson Photo News - proved a popular choice in the Digital NZ poll, with many comments being posted on the site, including the following which will ring true with many Nelsonians. "The Photo News magazines are part of my history. Oh the excitement on the day they went on sale each month, and the competition in our house to be first to read it. I fully support this publication being digitised. On a personal level it would be great to be able to revisit these magazines. On a wider aspect, there is huge content of historical value to the Nelson region and its people."

The resulting win gave the project sufficient funds to complete the digitisation work, which will see searchable copies of each issue from the chosen years available online.

The project is of significance not only for Nelson but also nationally. The Photo News was published under a franchise type arrangement by Logan Print Ltd in Gisborne with several regions throughout New Zealand having their own local Photo News. It is hoped that other areas may also digitise their respective issues as part of a wider Photo News project.

John Logan, eldest son of Logan Print founder Bob Logan remembers the Nelson Photo News with fondness. "I became very familiar with the comings and goings of community life in Nelson as we assembled and printed the pages of the magazines. My father held photographer/editor Barry Simpson in very high regard and we regarded him as the best of the eight other editors from around the country who belonged to the Photo News stable.
So it is perhaps fitting that Barry’s magazine is the first to have been digitized and published online. I know that my local library has similar plans for Gisborne Photo News but the project is not yet completed."

The digitisation component of the Nelson Photo News project has taken around a year to complete and has been very much a collaborative effort, with the Nelson Library Microfilm Sub-committee composed of members from Nelson Public Libraries: nga whare matauranga o whakatu, the Nelson Provincial Museum: Pupuri Taonga o Te Tai Ao, the Nelson Historical Society, the Nelson Branch of the New Zealand Society of Genealogists and The Nelson Institute.

To date the committee has been responsible for several microfilming and digitisation projects, including the microfilming of the Nelson Mail and more recently, the digitisation of the journals of the Nelson Historical Society.

Website: www.photonews.org.nz/nelson

From 1 February, changes will be made to the management of both systems to ensure increased access for locals. The following information describes how the systems work and details the changes being implemented over the next few weeks.

Background to the free internet service

APNK was launched in Nelson in November 2008 with the installation of 17 computers and wi-fi access across the three libraries in Nelson. A number of the APNK computers were installed in the Learning Centre in Elma Turner and have greatly improved the library’s teaching capacity. In Stoke and Nightingale Libraries the existing Council computers were replaced with the faster and higher specification APNK computers. A manual self-managing booking system is used to handle the demand for these computers. The wi-fi service is only available during opening hours.

Both the computers and wi-fi have proved extremely popular with the local community and visitors, and are heavily used on a daily basis.

How the internet service is funded

APNK is funded by Government through to the end of June 2011, and the National Library has recently renegotiated that funding through to 2020. The initial funding covered all direct costs: the network setup and cabling, purchase of computers and equipment, broadband charges, software licensing, servers, helpdesk support and all development and maintenance costs. The service is managed by a team of APNK staff based in Christchurch.

Although wi-fi broadband charges are covered by central funding, there is an annual $300 fee for wi-fi software licensing.

As part of the new funding agreement, from July 2011 Council will be required to meet up to 25% of annual operating costs. This means a maximum contribution of $10,806 annually. This is new funding and will need to be considered through the 2011-2012 Annual Plan process.

For Council to provide a similar level of service to customers outside of APNK it would require an initial set-up cost of $250,000 and ongoing maintenance costs in the region of $150,000 annually.

Council computers are paid for by Council ratepayers. These costs include all hardware, software, maintenance and system support costs, including staff time.

Where are the computers located?

Stoke Library has five APNK computers and wi-fi

Nightingale Library Memorial has two APNK computers and wi-fi

Elma Turner Library has 10 APNK computers and wi-fi, plus 14 Council provided computers (eight adult, two young adult and four children’s) running free internet service.

About the quality of the computers

The APNK computers are vastly superior to the older Council provided computers as they are faster, newer, have all Office applications enabling CV creation, webcams, USB, DVD and CD drives enabled, and have Skype and other popular software installed. APNK also provide backup support and advice to staff for assisting users with software and technical problems. The original APNK contract required these machines to be freely available to all library users.

The quality of the APNK computers has meant they are most sought after resource of the computers available.

The Council PCs are now reaching the end of their life and starting to fail. Options available were to replace them with more APNK computers (approximate cost $2,500 per computer) or upgrade the Council computers (approximate cost $70,000).

Council decided on the upgrade and in response to local concerns, to install software restricting usage to Library card holders only. The reasoning behind this decision is to ensure Library card holders have preferential access to computers.

Who uses the computers

Whilst we know that heavy use is made of the computers and wi-fi, the Libraries cannot give accurate statistics to the breakdown of specific users as currently staff don’t ask/identify who uses the service.

However, staff perceptions are that throughout the year heavy use of the computers is made by the local community. Over the summer season, many national and international visitors to Nelson also use the service, particularly the wi-fi facility via their personal laptops.

Libraries updating computers and software to manage usage

To help manage usage Council is making some changes. New, up-to-date computers have been purchased to replace the failing Council owned computers. They will have a similar standard of hardware and software installed to the existing APNK computers and will also have reservation software. Usage will be restricted to Library card holders only through a log in system which will require the library member’s barcode number to gain access.

Council has also purchased software to be installed on the APNK computers to help manage usage. APNK has recently relaxed the rule about its computers being freely available to all library users, and changed the requirement to “some computers must be freely available to all library users”. This allows the Council to ensure a portion of the APNK computers are available to the local community whilst the remainder are available to all library users. This will be achieved by Library staff inquiring if computer users are locals or tourists before supplying them with a code to access the APNK computers.

What will the changes mean?

There will be two free internet systems, both of similar quality.

One system will be exclusively available to Library card holders and fully paid for by Council ratepayers.

The other APNK system will be available to a mixture of locals and visitors and will be 75% funded by Central Government (subject to Annual Plan approval).

Advantages for local users and residents who are not library members

The new Council owned computers, which will soon be of the same standard as the APNK PCs, will be solely for the use of Library card holders. An electronic reservation system limiting use to one hour a day, will be put in place and show at a glance which times are available or booked. Bookings can be made by visiting the library up to a day before the session.

For locals who are not library members, a number of the APNK computers will be preferentially available for their use. If you are not a library member, it only takes about ten minutes to join and it’s free to any Nelson, Tasman or Marlborough resident or ratepayer. There is no annual fee or ongoing cost to be a member of the Nelson Public Libraries, apart from any reservation or late fees you may incur.

You can join online for temporary registration and then confirm with a visit to any library. Or you can simply come into any of the three Nelson Public Libraries with proof (of address) that you either reside in or are a ratepayer in Nelson, Tasman or Marlborough, as well as a form of personal ID.

Proof of address should be “official” mail sent to you at your residential address, e.g. a telephone, electricity or rates account, while Photo ID is preferable for personal identification, e.g. a driver’s licence or passport.

So who’s a local?

Any Nelson, Tasman or Marlborough resident or ratepayer, as the three Councils have a reciprocal borrowing/usage policy.

What else can Library membership offer me?

Nelson Public Libraries are not just about computers, or books! Find out about Library membership.

*More about APNK?

Aotearoa People’s Network Kahuroa (APNK) is a Government initiative developed in 2005 as part of the New Zealand Government’s Digital Strategy and is run through the National Library. The intention is to provide free access to broadband internet services for local communities to help bridge the digital divide.

Libraries were chosen as the vehicle for this initiative as they are one of the few community facilities that are both free and accessible to everyone. Whilst hosted by libraries, this service was established to benefit anyone who has access to a public library and is not intended solely for library card holders.

APNK was originally launched in 2007 and is now available in over 120 public libraries throughout New Zealand.

Correction to recent Live Nelson

In a recent Live Nelson, the statement was published “The free internet service available at Public Libraries is being funded by Central Government. There is no support from rates”. This is not a completely accurate reflection of the current service which is outlined below. The error is regretted.
