Junior golf programme

The Waahi Taakaro Junior Golf Programme consists of 23 lessons and covers all the basic elements required to have a solid foundation for the golf game. The lessons are provided free by volunteer coaches who have undergone training and are certified by the NZGA.

It targets children aged six to 18 living in the Nelson-Tasman area. The students are divided into teams of the same age groups so development amongst the students will be in the same range.

Designed by the New Zealand Golf Association (NZGA), the programme introduces the game one element at a time.  Each lesson builds on the previous lesson.

Cost

The program is available for children from 6 – 18. While the lessons are free, we do ask that your child become a member of the Waahi Taakaro Golf Club.  We have created very low cost memberships to make this easy for everyone. 

Membership fees

Fees for students cover the following items:

  • All lessons
  • Club membership through the fiscal year (ends 31 March)
  • Use of grounds for practice
  • Membership in NZGA
  • Course play

Age 6 to 13 fees:          $38
Age 14 to 18 fees:        $72

Lessons for parents are $50 but do not include club membership, membership in NZGA or course play. 

Lesson schedule

All lessons are conducted on Thursday evenings and last approximately one hour.  The 2009/10 Juniors Programme begins on Thursday 8 October 2009 at 4.30pm.  We will break over the Christmas and Holiday season.  We will have a session on17th December, break for the holidays, then begin again on 11 February. 

We encourage all the parents to stay and observe - you can even join in if you like.

In golf, like all athletics, some find it easier to excel. While we want to help all of our juniors maximize their game, we emphasise the fun of golf. After all, golf is a game where people of unequal skill can compete evenly…and everyone can have fun. 

Course levels

The Level One courses are for beginning students with little or no golfing experience.  Level Two courses are available as students become more advanced in subsequent years.

Rainouts

Please call the pro shop at 548 7301 if you want to know if a rainout has been called. 

Competitions and play

Students may play on the main course with the clearance of one of the coaches. A 3-hole junior course is available to all. Students less than 12, even with coach’s clearance, should be with an adult when playing the main course.

Students wishing to compete are encouraged to play on Saturday mornings at 8.30am.  Please check-in at the pro shop for pairings. 

Parents

Help from parents is always appreciated.  Parents can help when we have sausage sizzles or when we have competitions on the course.  Please indicate on the registration form attached if you can help. The golf course also offer a class for parents who are interested in learning.
