At its meeting on Thursday Council will consider the future of the Montgomery Square upgrade project and how best to move the project forward following the High Court decision earlier this year. That decision prohibited Council from accepting tenders to carry out the original work proposed in Montgomery Square, and directed Council to undertake consultation, in accordance with the Local Government Act 2002, on the proposed work. Dr David Jackson, Council’s Principal Adviser City Development says the consultation process will be carefully reviewed, taking account of that and other Court decisions, and will take the project right back to the drawing board.…

Nelson City Council will investigate the possibility of making a bid to be a host city for the 2015 FIFA Under 20’s World Cup. Nelson is one of 12 Councils invited to submit a Request for Proposal to New Zealand Football. Council is asked to register its interest today with the full proposal required by 30 November 2011.…

The skate park planned for Stoke is to go ahead at the Greenmeadows site. Council has agreed to move to the design stage of the skatepark on the corner of Main Road Stoke and Songer Street. In their decision Council acknowledged the importance of providing a safe place for youth in the centre of Stoke where their activities can contribute positively to the vitality of the area and they can feel part of the community.…

The Nelson City Council is supporting the union of Nelson City and Tasman District. In a submission to the Local Government Commission’s call for views on the proposed reorganisation, Council agrees the move is appropriate, but with some further recommendations. These include changing the proposed name from Nelson-Tasman District to Nelson Council, Maori representation, strengthening Community Board responsibilities and appointing an independent chair with a casting vote on the Transition committee.…

Following three hours of discussion in front of a packed public gallery, Council decided today to accept most of the recommendations of the Stage 4 Report of the study. Council will now seek further information through an issues and options paper about what extra protection can be put in place, possibly through the Nelson Resource Management Plan and Regional Policy Statement, to protect any future uses of the Southern Arterial Corridor. The Stoke Library is in for a makeover. The new look will involve refreshing the décor and creating a comfortable seating area, in response to requests from Stoke users. There’ll be a separate area for computers use, a more flexible children’s’ area, and other zones in the library will be enhanced.…

The popular regional awards are now open for nominations until Friday 16 September. This is a joint Nelson City and Tasman District Council initiative. This year there are eight categories to enter including a revamped Sustainable Design category, which has been broadened to include individual buildings.…

Nelson residents are pretty pleased with both their lot and Council facilities and services, according to the latest survey of residents and a customer service survey taken at public counters. While the residents survey covered a variety of areas, the counter surveys at Civic House and Nelson Public Libraries focussed purely on customer service. The residents’ survey shows marked increases in satisfaction with the city’s parks open spaces and recreation facilities, which all rated highly, while 22% more residents agree Council is doing a better job than last year.…
