A seven-member steering group has been appointed by Nelson City Council to engage community and business involvement in Rugby World Cup 2011.

The Nelson RWC 2011 Steering Group members are:

  • Aldo Miccio, Nelson City Councillor and Steering Group Chair
  • Ali Boswijk, Nelson City Councillor
  • Sara Chapman, Chairman of Tasman Bays Heritage Trust and former strategic planner for Saatchi & Saatchi
  • Shane Drummond, representing Tasman Rugby Union
  • Tim King, Tasman District Councillor
  • Bronwyn Monopoli, chartered accountant
  • Pete Rainey, Nelson City Councillor

The Steering Group's role is to involve as many residents, businesses and visitors as possible in the celebration of RWC 2011 in Nelson. While Council staff are dedicated to delivering the fundamentals of two matches, team hosting (TBC), Fan Zones and the festival of Rugby, the Steering Group will lead and coordinate business and community involvement that will help make RWC 2011 in Nelson the premier event of the decade.

Chair Aldo Miccio says, "I'm really excited about this collection of talented people, everyone brings something special to the table and I know we'll be able to do great things for Nelson's part in RWC 2011."

An eighth steering group position is open to an iwi representative and conversations are ongoing with local Māori.

Steering Group meetings are closed to the public; the first meeting is tomorrow, 4 November.
