Train

The Tranz Scenic Railway

(phone 0800 872 476 and www.tranzscenic.co.nz) travels the length of New Zealand but the Nelson traveller needs to go to either Picton or Kaikoura to pick it up.  

Ferries

Interislander

Operates the Aratere, Arahura, and Kaitaki (phone 0800 802 802, www.interislander.co.nz) ferrying cars and passengers across Cook Strait, between Picton (South Island) and Wellington (North Island). Ferry crossings take approximately three hours. The Kaitaki ship has room for up to 1600 passengers and is the largest ferry in New Zealand waters.

Bluebridge Cook Strait Ferry

Four return sailings a day (except Christmas Day) between Wellington and Picton, more frequent during the summer. With a sailing time of just over three hours the Bluebridge service offers comfortable lounge areas, café style food, free movies and warm Kiwi hospitality. Suburban Bus Lines

is one of Nelson City Council's solutions to transport hassles. Routes have been selected that are not served by commercial bus services, with stops at the hospital, libraries and popular shopping areas. The service is operated by Suburban Bus Lines (SBL) +64 3 548 3290.

InterCity

The Intercity Coachline (www.intercitycoach.co.nz and email info@coachnet.co.nz), as well as connecting with the Tranz Alpine Express train at Greymouth Railway Station will take you from Nelson to most centres in the North and South Island. Atomic Travel

Atomic Travel (phone +64 508 108 359, www.atomictravel.co.nz and email info@atomictravel.co.nz) will take you up to Blenheim and Picton and down to Christchurch and on to Queenstown or Westport. From Westport, it links to the Karamea Express (www.lastresort.co.nz email: enquiries@lastresort.co.nz), which also links to the InterCity Coachline.
