Seaweek 2010

Seaweek takes a new direction this year. New Zealanders are being urged to think about their contribution to sustainable fishing.

Fish for the future

This year’s theme, “Fish for the Future,” has been chosen to raise awareness of the role of fish in healthy oceans and is already attracting debate.

Activities on offer

All at Sea at The Suter

The Suter has an exhibition entitled “All at Sea” and a complementary lecture series running through March.

Arty party

Kiwi Conservation Club and Forest and Bird are hosting an “Arty Party” at Rabbit Island on Sunday 7 March, 3pm.

Student photo competition

The Student Seaweek Photo Competition, organised by Nayland College student Mitchell Chandler was a great success. The competition was open to all students in the Nelson and Tasman district and aimed to celebrate and raise awareness of our precious marine environment as part of Seaweek (March 7-14). The ‘Around the Sea’ category was won by Gracie Kroos, aged 9 from Henley School with her entry ‘Shipwreck’. Iris Hutter from Nayland College won the ‘In the Sea’ category with her crab photo.

Nayland Primary Enviro group won a special recognition award for outstanding participation and a highly commended award went to Connor Wetzel-Burger, aged 8, Nayland Primary and Jessica Stacey-Reid, aged 7, Nayland Primary. The winners each received prizes thanks to Nayland Physiotherapy.
