Our Council » Mayor and Councillors » Councillors' opinion column
A recent Nelson Mail ‘50 Years On’ column recounted the debate that raged over the controversial purchase of Isel House for the citizens of Nelson. After first voting no, Councillors later revisited the issue, and now we all enjoy this wonderful asset. Similar debates raged over the acquisition of Broadgreen, Melrose, Saxton Field and the creation of the Trafalgar Centre.
Some things never change! There’s always vigorous debate over Council spending.
With this Council’s term coming to a close, I want to thank Councils past and present for ensuring we Nelsonians continue to live in a city that looks good and has assets we’re proud of. While the 13 elected members of Council are sometimes commended - but more often blamed! – for decisions made, it’s our staff and contractors who manage the work, and make things happen. Because these people are often overlooked, I’d like to commend the commitment of the team who work so diligently behind the scenes.
Some recent comments in the media suggest this Council has achieved little in the last three years. It’s easy to focus on negatives, and overlook the positives. On a recent walk around my neighbourhood I noted these things.
New additions to the Atawhai cycleway, the well maintained children’s playground in North Road, the pond reconstruction at Miyazu Gardens, Founders Heritage Park free entry for ratepayers, huge numbers of youngsters enjoying the skate park (it’s always busy!), paving added at Neale Park, a new parking area added, and improved road layout in Sovereign Street.
Trafalgar Park looks great. Opus’s development won awards for innovation in turf reconstruction and communications future proofing. Anzac Park has new toilets, and Nelmac keeps the city’s grass mowed, and gardens seasonally planted.
I challenge you to look for simple improvements and well-maintained facilities in your neighbourhood.
And then, how about a letter of encouragement and appreciation to those responsible, instead of just the complaints?
