'In My Opinion'

Councillor Alison McAlpine

13 March 2010

Sunday March 7 was designated Children’s Day. Not a day for commercial gain but rather one when hopefully families were able to focus on the joy of their children and the
privilege of having them as part of their lives.

One of the riches our Nelson families give to their children is the opportunity to live in one of the most beautiful parts of the world – an area which offers ample opportunities for sound physical, emotional, intellectual and spiritual growth.

Our Nelson region has it all for children – great schools, many recreational opportunities, beautiful beaches, well-sited play parks, and ready access to the lakes, rivers, hills and mountains….and places like the Brook Sanctuary and Natureland – plus many more.

I trust that last Sunday many families were able to have a picnic, a beach outing, or a visit to one of the many organized events available for family enjoyment at little or no expense.

Perhaps Children’s Day is a timely reminder of some wisdom passed on to us by Dorothy Nolte….

If children live with criticism they learn to condemn.
If children live with encouragement they will learn to be confident.
If children live with acceptance they learn to find love in the world.
If children live with friendliness they learn that the world is a good place in which to live. If children live with serenity they learn to have peace of mind.

Let’s continue to add value to our Nelson children’s lives.
