Council not to spend on amalgamation advertising

The Nelson City Council will not spend any money in advertising the amalgamation of Nelson City and Tasman District as recommended by the Local Government Commission.

Council resolved at its meeting today not to commit funds or resources to advertising in support or opposition of the reorganisation scheme for the Union of Nelson City and Tasman District in accordance with Clause 55(2), Schedule 3 of the Local Government Act 2002.

The reorganisation scheme is subject to electoral polls in both Council areas with more than 50% required in each area to for the union to proceed. Polls close on 21 April 2012 and if the amalgamation goes ahead the new Nelson Tasman District Council will come into force on 1 November 2012.
