Nelson how do I love thee

Let me count the ways!

A letter from a new Nelson resident to Mayor Marshall in October, 2009.

The climate, naturally.

All the festivals and happenings.

The summer flower baskets, the old-fashioned main street and the cheap parking. (Also the fact that shop assistants tell you where to go to buy something if their shop doesn't have it!)

Rocks Road (pity it’s a state highway!).

Tahunanui beach with "doggy beach" at the end.

The friendly people, multicultural mix and casual dress code.

The many cafes, restaurants and the Saturday market.

The three libraries and helpful librarians.

Riverside pool and its staff.

The mini airport too!

The walkways and cycleways and guides to them.

Also the many interesting places within a short drive from Nelson.

The sense of community and Council's concern for the city, its people and the planet.

It was too difficult to keep my list to ten favourite things. I realise I have forgotten the local papers, the parks and gardens and excellent hospital and specialists...I could go on and on but I daresay you already know that Nelson is gem and that is why so many people move here and so few leave!

– Anonymous

Thora Young Essay award

The Thora Young Essay Competition

This year's competition was particularly interesting to councillors across New Zealand, with the topic if 'If I were a City Councillor, I would ..."

Central Nelson would be pedestrian only, Neale Park upgraded to soccer pitch quality and a safer and more efficient system for cyclists were the three things intermediate student Hugo Lawrence would do if he was a Nelson City Councillor.

Organised by the Nelson Residents Association and sponsored by the Lions Club, this year was the fifth year of the competition named after the woman who until her death in 2005, was the secretary of the Nelson Residents Association. She had a strong belief young people should be encouraged to take an interest in civic affairs.

Congratulations!

Nelson College Prep student Hugh Lawrence won this year's competition ahead of seven other authors.

Read the essays
