Helping communities help themselves

The Council provides some financial support to community groups that contribute towards community outcomes. The funds available to community groups are limited, and all come from rates.

The Community Assistance Policy guides Council when it considers applications for funds and will help groups applying for other forms of community assistance to link their activities to community outcomes, and contribute to improved community well-being.

Support for community initiatives

A revised Community Assistance Policy was adopted in 2009. The bulk of Council's community assistance is allocated through community contracts rather than through one-off grants. The revised policy places all applicants on an equal footing in that funding will be allocated on the merit of how well the project will contribute towards the Nelson community outcomes.
