Our Long Term Plan defines the work we plan to do in our incredible city over the next 10 years - and we need your input! Visit the draft Long Term Plan page for more information. Submissions closed at 4.30pm Wednesday 16 May. Hearings will occur 14/15 June and 18/19 June, if you have made a submission and indicated you wish to speak at the hearings you will be contacted to confirm a time.
The main purpose of the RLTP is to identify the transport activities proposed for our region in the next three years. These are projects that use national funding, will contribute towards the key issues and targets identified in the Regional Land Transport Strategy and are consistent with the Government Policy Statement. Thanks to eveyone who gave their feedback on the Landscape Conservation Plan for Queen’s Gardens. This is a particularly important piece of work at this time as plans are being drawn up for the redevelopment of the Suter Art Gallery on the edge of the Gardens. There will be a hearing for those who wanted to speak directly to Council on Wednesday 22 March. Go here for more information.
Nelson City Council and Tasman District Council propose to adopt a joint Waste Management and Minimisation Plan, which outlines the Councils’ waste management and minimisation aims, funding requirements, and activities for the region over the next 6 years. Those who wanted to speak in support of their submission will do so at a hearing on 19 March 2012.
Nelson’s current Dog Control Bylaw is due for review and sections 10 and 10AA of the Dog Control Act require the Council to adopt a dog control policy and bylaw at the same time. Council, in making its decision, will be taking account of all 700 submissions made. A hearing of submitters was held on 20 March and 23 March.

Nelson City Council is making improvements to the bus service that will begin early next year. Council had previously signalled in its Annual Plan that more resources would be put into making the buses easier and more convenient for commuters to use to get to work.
Council publicly notified proposed Plan Change A2 on Saturday 24 September 2011, submissions are invited until 5pm 28 October 2011.
The proposal makes two changes to the operative Nelson Air Quality Plan to align it with the National Environmental Standards for Air Quality (NES).
Council is undertaking a review of the Parking and Vehicle Control Bylaw 2004 (Bylaw 207). The draft bylaw has been amended and updated to improve the fairness, clarity, readability and enforceability of the bylaw. Read more here.
In reviewing the Speed Limits Bylaw 210, which came into force in 2004, Council is proposing to make some changes to the Bylaw.

Council proposes to adopt a regional public transport plan which outlines Council’s public transport aims, funding, and activities for the next ten years. Find out more about the draft Nelson Regional Public Transport Plan.
Council reviewed its Social Wellbeing Policy in 2010 and 2011 and a revised policy was adopted on 28 June 2011. It will be considered for review again in 2017.

The Council on 24 February confirmed the delegation of responsibility for navigation safety to Port Nelson Ltd, subject to resolution by the Directors of Port Nelson Ltd and establishment of a formal agreement between Council and Port Nelson Ltd. This Bylaw combines two current bylaws: the Navigation and Safety Bylaw 2002 and the Recreational Marina Bylaw 2005.
A Hearings Panel heard submissions on the draft Navigation Safety Bylaws 2010 (218) on Thursday, 2 September, 2010. It has subsequently considered all submissions and provided drafting instructions to amend the Bylaw. The Panel will recommend an amended Bylaw to the Council.
