At its meeting today, Council agreed to support a concept proposal to be part of the National Cycleway Project envisioned by the Prime Minister. Nelson is putting in a joint bid between Nelson City Council and Nelson Cycle Trails Trust to create a hub and spoke scheme, where multiple rides can be accessed from one location. The scheme will centre on existing mountain bike amenities in the hills around the city and will be added to works already programmed and budgeted in the Nelson Community Plan.…

Volunteers are invited to come along and take part in creating a new community mural at Victory Square this weekend. Victory Community Association’s (VCA) new community mural, created by artist Chris Finlayson is being painted on the “On the Spot” dairy at Victory Square. Volunteers are invited to come along from 10am till 4pm on Saturday and Sunday and again the following weekend.…

Think you’ve got talent? Local singers are being asked to try out for an opportunity to sing before thousands in an idyllic outdoor venue at the height of a Nelson summer. For the first time, Nelson Opera in the Park will feature a local singer chosen from auditions in the city later this month. And you don’t have to just sing opera – the competition is open to any individual who sings.…

NELMAC’s positive financial position for the year ended 30 June 2009 resulted in Council receiving a special dividend of $250,000 last month. The special dividend, which will be used to pay down debt, is in addition to a normal dividend of 50% of the tax paid profit that amounted to $289,095. NELMAC’s Board Chair Richard Jenkins is pleased to had had a profitable year and share the earnings with the Nelson community.…

Top opera stars and emerging contemporary singers take the stage in Nelson in February for what promises to be a stunning evening of opera by the sea. Nelson City Council Festivals Producer, Sophie Kelly, says the line up has been finalised with contemporary singer Hollie Smith confirmed for the February 13 event being held at the Tahunanui Domain for the first time. Hollie has recently toured internationally to the UK, France, United States, Canada and Australia.…

A new era in Council customer service was marked today with the opening of the Customer Service Centre on the ground floor of Civic House. Following a blessing by Council Kaumatua Andy Joseph, Mayor Kerry Marshall cut a string with a line of balloons popped by Centre staff, and the doors opened to the public. Lord Nelson was on hand to welcome the first customers and give out spot prizes.…

Hampden Street School will trial Walking School Buses for the first time, starting next week. If successful, the buses will become a permanent feature from Term 1 next year. The Buses have been set up by Rachel Rae, Deputy Principal at Hampden Street School along with Nelson City Council’s School Travel Planner, Sarah Downs.…

The opening of the Council’s new Customer Service Centre is just days away. The former Post Office on the ground floor of Civic House has undergone a complete transformation over recent months and will open to the public in its new role on Monday 7 December. Aimed at enhancing and improving the customer experience, the new centre will provide customers with all their needs in one place.…

The health of approximately 30 trees in the CBD has been adversely affected, possibly due to one or more chemicals identified by Nelson City Council in soil samples last week. An ongoing Council investigation to determine what has affected the trees has pointed to the presence of two different chemicals in soil samples: Metsulfuron and Terbuthylazine. Metsulfuron is used for the control of gorse, broom and generally as a woody weed killer.…

It’s that time of year again, with tickets ready to go on sale for the 29th annual Mayor’s Christmas dinner. The event will be held at the Victory Room at the Trafalgar Centre, with the doors open from 11am on Christmas Day. The celebrations will start with live entertainment, drinks and sing-a-long, followed by a sumptuous feast of ham, roast chicken and veggies and three different puddings.…
