$40,000 recreation funding up for grabs

The Nelson City Council Physical Activity Fund is now open for applications from community and not-for-profit groups running recreation and sports activities for Nelson residents. The Committee allocating the grants will give priority to projects that target children and young people, but applications for all age groups are welcome until 10 September 2010. Approximately $40,000 is available for the 2010-2011 round of funding.…

Discussions on staged approach to Nelson's Performing Arts and Conference Facility

A proposal for public discussion on a conference facility for Nelson, and the Trafalgar Centre northern-end extension as a potential site, is included in a report going to the full Nelson City Council meeting next Thursday. Mayor Kerry Marshall says “The Performing Arts Centre and Conference facility have been a key focus for council workshops over the last three months. These are big ticket items and we are acutely aware that development must be tackled in the right way to achieve the best results for our city.…

Local children name city footbridge

A sense of ownership and participation in Civic affairs bears fruit this Friday when a small Nelson footbridge is officially named by local school children. 11 year old Paige Byers and fellow pupils from Central School wanted to see the footbridge across the lower Brook street stream named to reflect its use by students from their own school, nearby St Josephs and NMIT. They researched the area and made a case to the Hearings Committee of Nelson City Council to have the bridge formally named Te Arahanga Ki Te Mātauranga (the Bridge to Knowledge and Learning).…

Council gets proactive on food safety

Nelson City Council, in conjunction with the New Zealand Food Safety Authority is leading the way in encouraging local food business to adopt a new approach to food safety. Nelson is one of several proactive Councils around the country that have adopted a voluntary implementation programmed which enables food premises to change to the new risk based Food Control Plan system ahead of legislative changes to the Food Act which could come through later this year. The Food Control Plan is a new food safety management tool to help operators simply and effectively meet their food safety obligations.…

Reduced water pressure during repairs on Tuesday

Areas of Nelson will experience reduced water pressure next week as Council does maintenance and repairs on the main trunk water main. The work will mean a shut down of the main trunk water main between the Water Treatment Plant and Brook St for a day on Tuesday 22 June.   The shutdown will start at 9:00am and it’s anticipated full water supply should be restored by 6:00am the next day, Wednesday 23 June.…

Submissions on the Nelson City Council’s new Arts Policy close this Wednesday (June 16 2010) and anyone with an interest in the arts is urged to have their say. The draft policy follows from the Nelson Tasman Regional Arts Strategy approved in 2009.…

2010 Community Assistance Funding applications open

Applications are now open for Nelson City Council's Community Assistance Funding for 2010/11. Applications are invited until 10am Monday 12 July 2010 and the allocations will be decided at a Council meeting on Monday 9 August. This year the funding available for community assistance contracts and one-off grants will be $90,684, as $345,600 was allocated to two year contracts last year.…

What do people think of Council services and performance?

The annual taking of the city’s Council satisfaction temperature is about to get under way with the 2010 Nelson City Council Survey starting on Monday (14 June) and running for the next few weeks.   The final report on the survey findings is due at the end of July. This year’s survey focuses on everything from overall Council performance and value for money, recycling and home heating, through to opinions about rain water collection requirements, parks and housing affordability.…
