The Pitt Memorial Gates and gardens have a Historic Places Trust category II listing as a historic place. Albert Pitt was the Minister of Defence, Lt Colonel of the NZ Militia and C.O of the Nelson Military District 1877-1899. In 1897 he was the most senior district commander in the colony. To celebrate the Diamond Jubilee in London he took the first New Zealand contingent overseas. It was a 54 strong bi-cultural group comprising a Māori section of 20 men nominated by the department of Native affairs. At the time of this “jubilee fever’ many volunteers signed up for the forces and went away to the Boer War which started on 12 October 1899.
The Pitt Memorial Gates are located at the Queens Gardens Bridge Street entrance. Queens Gardens is located on Bridge Street east of Collingwood before reaching the new Normanby Bridge.
