Winter air pollution in Nelson was recognised during the 1970’s and smoke monitoring commenced soon after.
During 2000 up to date PM10 monitoring equipment was hired (which measures small smoke particles less than 10 microns in diameter ) which are more closely associated with human health impacts (heart and lung problems). The results showed that dangerous levels of PM10 occurred regularly during winter.
In response Council purchased its own PM10 monitoring equipment setting up a permanent site in the Victory Square area. The monitoring results are compared against the National Environmental Standard (NES) for PM10 which require that no more than one breach of a 24 hour average of 50 µg/m3 is met by 2020.
